On this day in 1962, Johnny Carson began hosting the "Tonight"
show on NBC-TV. He stayed with the show for 29 years. Jack Paar
was the previous host.

military alliance between Germany and Italy known as the "Pact
of Steel."

President Richard Nixon became the first U.S. president to visit
Russia on this day in 1972. He met with Soviet leader Leonid
Brezhnev.

In Birmingham, AL. on this day in 2002, a jury convicted former Ku
Klux Klansman Bobby Frank Cherry (above) of murder in the 1963
church bombing that killed four girls shown on the memorial below.

Johnny Carson hosted NBC’s "Tonight Show" for the last time on
this day in 1992. He had been host for 30 years.

Laurence Kerr Olivier (Baron Olivier)  (May 22, 1907 – July 11, 1989)

English actor and director Laurence Olivier who, along with his
contemporaries Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud, dominated
the British stage of the mid-20th century. He also worked in films
throughout his career, playing more than fifty cinema roles. Late
in his career, he had considerable success in television roles.

The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon was an annual event held
on the eve of and during the Labor Day holiday to raise money for the
Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The show was founded and
hosted by actor and comedian Jerry Lewis, who hosted the broadcast
from its 1966 inception until 2010. We recently lost Jerry on August
20. He was 91 years old.

This Is Your Life is a reality documentary series broadcast on NBC-TV
from 1952 to 1961. It was originally hosted by its creator and producer
Ralph Edwards. In the show, the host would surprise guests and then
proceed to take them through their lives in front of an audience that
included special guest appearances by colleagues, friends and family.

Edwards revived the show in 1971-72, while Joseph Campanella hosted
a version in 1983. Edwards returned for some specials in the late 1980s,
before his death in 2005.
