SAM WALTON ~ BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1918

Samuel Moore "Sam" Walton (March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992) was a
businessman and entrepreneur born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma best known
for founding the retailers Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. Walton’s career began
when he joined JP Penney as a management trainee in Des Moines, Iowa
three days after graduating from college in 1940. In 1945, after a stint in
the U.S. Army, Walton took over management of his first variety store.

CONTROVERSIAL WRITER BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1902

John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. wrote the Pulitzer-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath 
(1939) and East of Eden (1952) and Of mice and Men  (1937). He wrote a total 
of twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and five 
collections of short stories. In 1962, John Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize
for Literature. His later work reflected his wide range of interests, including
marine biology, politics, religion, history, and mythology. Steinbeck was 66
when he died in December of 1968.

satire, cartoons and poetry. It was founded by Harold Ross and his wife,
Jane Grant, a New York Times reporter. The New Yorker started as a
weekly and is now published 47 times per year, with five of these issues
covering two-week spans. The magazine has a wide audience outside of
New York.

TODAY IS DAVID BRENNER’S 75th BIRTHDAY

David Brenner  is a standup comedian, actor, author, and filmmaker. Prior to
beginning his standup career, he wrote and directed over a hundred made-for-TV documentaries, which garnered him many awards, including an Emmy. Making his national television debut on the The Tonight Show, he has since become the most frequent guest on the show, with 158 appearances.
