FIRST U.S. SPACEWALK ON THIS DATE IN 1965

Edward white

Edward H. White (above) made the United States’ first spacewalk during
the Gemini 4 mission. It was on the third orbit when White opened his
hatch and used the hand-held maneuvering oxygen-jet gun to push
himself out of the capsule. The EVA started over the Pacific Ocean
near Hawaii and lasted 23 minutes, ending over the Gulf of Mexico.

Sally Kellerman is a actress and singer best known for her role as Major
Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the film M*A*S*H (1969), for which she
was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The
film became one of the biggest hits of the early 1970s for Twentieth
Century Fox.

Andy Griffith is a actor, director, producer, Grammy Award-winning Southern-
gospel singer and a writer. In 1957 Griffith made his film debut starring in Elia
Kazan’s epic film  A Face in the Crowd.  Griffith starred in a one-hour teleplay
version of No Time for sergeants in March 1955 on The united Steel Hour on
ABC. Griffith later reprised his role for the film version of the same name in
1958. He became better known for his TV roles, playing the lead characters
in the 1960-1968 sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show on CBS, and in the 1986 to
1995 legal drama, Matlock on NBC and ABC. Griffith was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush on
November 9, 2005.
