LANDMARK SERIES DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1957

The Twentieth Century was a half-hour documentary series televised by  
CBS. The premiere episode aired on Sunday October 20, 1957 and ran
until 1966. It was hosted and narrated by Walter Cronkite. It covered
historical events of the 20th century and consisted of newsreel footage
and interviews. The sponsor of the show was Prudential Insurance
Company of America.

Sam Donaldson, retired reporter and ABC-TV news anchor, was in his teens
when this 1952 picture was taken of him behind the microphone at KEPO
radio in El Paso, Texas.

BROADCASTERS DEBUT ON THIS DATE IN 1930

During the 1920s, Lowell Thomas was a magazine writer and editor. It was
on September 29, 1930 that he debuted as a broadcaster with the NBC radio
Blue network, delivering a nightly news and commentary program. Thomas
later worked for CBS News during his long globetrotting career. He was
inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1989. Lowell Thomas died in
1981 at age 89.

NEWS MAGAZINE DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1968

60 Minutes is a CBS television news magazine, which has aired since Tuesday 
September 24, 1968. The program was created by long-time producer Don 
Hewitt (below) using a unique style of reporter-centered investigation. It
has been among the top-rated TV programs for much of its life, and has
garnered numerous awards over the years, including 78 Emmys, as of
2007. It is considered by many to be the most distinguished investigative
television program in America. In 2002, 60 Minutes was ranked #6 on TV
Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.
