Over the course of his career, David Brinkley received ten Emmy Awards,
three George Foster Peabody Awards, and the Presidential Medal of
Freedom. He wrote three books, including the critically acclaimed 1988
bestseller Washington Goes to War, about how World War II transformed
the nation’s capital.

DOCUMENTARY DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1955

Wide Wide World was a 90-minute documentary series telecast live on NBC on
Sunday afternoons at 4pm Eastern. Hosed by Dave Garroway (above), Wide
Wide World
was introduced on the Producer’s Showcase series on June 27,
1955. The premiere episode, featuring entertainment from the US, Canada
and Mexico, was the first international North American telecast in the history
of television. It returned in the fall as a regular Sunday series, telecast from
October 16, 1955 to June 8, 1958. The program was sponsored by General
Motors. In March 1956, Time magazine reported that it was the highest-rated
daytime show on television.

NEWS SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN1978

20/20 is a "television newsmagazine", broadcast on ABC since June 6, 1978. Created
by ABC News executive Roone Arledge, the show was designed similarly to CBS’s 60 Minutes but focuses more on human interest stories than international and political subjects. The show’s anchors on the premiere telecast were Robert Hughes,editor
of Esquire magazine who also served as senior producer and Time magazine art
critic Robert Hughes (both shown below).

to August 26, 1998 on the ABC television network and was originally hosted by Jim McKay (below). The title continued to be used for general sports programs until 2006.

Edward R. Murrow (April 25, 1908 – April 27, 1965) was a broadcast journalist 
who first came to prominence with a series of radio news broadcasts during World  
War ll, which were followed by millions of listeners in the United States and also in 
Canada. Many of his fellow journalists considered Murrow to be one of journalism’s   
greatest figures, noting his honesty and integrity in delivering the news. Murrow 
produced a series of TV news reports that helped lead to the censure of Senator 
Joseph McCarthy.
