Elizabeth Leadbetter “Betty” Meier
(July 26, 1904 – December 2, 2014)

Elizabeth died peacefully at her home in Portland on
Tuesday, Dec. 2. She was the granddaughter of Henry
L. Pittock, pioneer wood and paper magnate who is
often referred to as the founder of The Oregonian 
newspaper. Born in Portland, Oregon, Betty was the 
youngest of four children. She is survived by her children;
stepson; 24 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and
four great-great-grandchildren.

The comic strip Blondie was created by cartoonist Chic Young who drew
the strip until his death in 1973, when creative control passed to his son
Dean Young, who continues to write the strip.

The success of the strip, distributed by King Features Syndicate, led to
the long-running Blondie film series (1938–1950) and the popular Blondie
radio program (1939–1950).
