BIG NOMINATION WAS ON THIS DAY IN 1960

Kennedy’s nomination was a big moment for the primary system | Constitution Center

In Los Angeles, California, Senator John F. Kennedy of
Massachusetts was
nominated for the presidency by the
Democratic Party Convention, defeating Senator
Lyndon
B.
Johnson
of Texas. The next day, Johnson was named
Kennedy’s running mate by a unanimous vote of the
convention.

Four months later, on November 8, Kennedy won 49.7
percent of the popular vote in one of the closest elections
for president in U.S. history, surpassing by a fraction the
49.6 percent received by Vice President
Richard M. Nixon,
a Republican.

Geraldine Anne Ferraro (August 26, 1935 – March 26, 2011)

Walter Mondale, the leading Democratic presidential
candidate, announced that he has chosen Representative
Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate in 1984.

Ferraro, a daughter of Italian immigrants, had previously
gained recognition as a vocal advocate of women’s rights
in Congress. Ferraro became the first female vice presidential
candidate to represent a major political party.
