Sir Henry Morton Stanley was a Welsh journalist and explorer famous for his
exploration of Africa. He is also famous for being sent by the New York Herald
newspaper to find David Livingstone, a Scottish medical missionary with the
London Missionary Society and explorer who had completely lost contact with
the outside world for six years and was ill with malaria. Stanley found Dr.
Livingstone near Lake Tanganyika in present-day Tanzania. Livingstone
remained ill for most of the last four years of his life. He died May 1, 1873
