John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut.
(May 9, 1800 – December 2, 1859)
John Brown was an abolitionist who led armed anti-slavery
raids in Kansas and at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He studied
to become a Congregationalist minister; however, he soon
ran out of money and was forced to work at his father’s
tannery. He strongly believed that violent action was the
only way to bring an end to slavery.
