CHIMP ORBITS EARTH ON THIS DAY IN 1961

Mercury-Atlas 5 was a unmanned spaceflight of the Mercury program. It
was launched with a 5 1/2 year old chimpanzee named Enos aboard. The
craft orbited the Earth twice and splashed down about 200 miles south of
Bermuda.

The Yankee Clipper returned to Earth at 3:58pm EST, in the Pacific Ocean, about 
500 nautical miles east of American Samoa.  After recovery by the USS Hornet,
they were flown to Pago Pago International Airport in Tafuna for a reception,
before being flown on a C-141 cargo plane to Honolulu.

MOON MISSION LAUNCH ON THIS DAY IN 1969

Apollo 12 was the sixth manned flight in the Apollo program and the second to land
on the Moon. It was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Mission commander Charles "Pete" Conrad and Lunar Module Pilot Alan L. Bean performed
just over one day and seven hours of lunar surface activity while Command Module
Pilot Richard F. Gordon remained in lunar orbit. The landing site for the mission was located in the southeastern portion of the Ocean of Storms.

PROBE LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1973

and Venus. It was launched approximately two years 
after
Mariner 9 and was the last spacecraft in the Mariner program.
