WINNING FOOTBALL COACH IS 49 TODAY
Charles "Chip" Kelly is the head football coach at the University of Oregon. Kelly
was named the 2009 and 2010 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, 2010 Eddie Robinson
Coach of the Year, 2010 Walter Camp Coach of the Year, 2010 Sporting News
Coach of the Year, and 2010 Associated Press Coach of the Year. Prior to being
named head coach, Kelly was the offensive coordinator for the Oregon Ducks
who beat the OSU Beavers 48-24 in the Civil War game held in Corvallis, Or.
Saturday.
IT WAS THE HAY MINERS VS. THE WEBFOOTS
The 1894 Oregon Agricultural College squad were called the Hay Miners.
The first Civil War game was played on Saturday, November 3, 1894 in
Corvallis where the Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) beat the Ducks
16-0. It was the team’s second year of existence. They would eventually
become Oregon State University.
The first reference to the "Civil War" name was in 1929 and came into
common use in 1937. Prior to that, it was called the "Oregon Classic"
or the "State Championship Game.”
