The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded in 1946, by owners
of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United
States and Canada. The league adopted the name National Basketball
Association (NBA) in 1949 after merging with the rival National Basketball
League (NBL). The NBA was born with ten teams from the BAA and seven
teams from the NBL.

African American track star Jesse Owens participated in the 1936 Summer
Olympics in Berlin, Germany, where he achieved international fame by
winning four gold medals. The first medal was for the 100m sprint on
August 3rd, defeating Ralph Metcalfe.

Donald Scott "Don" Drysdale (July 23, 1936 – July 3, 1993)
Drysdale was a Major League Baseball player and Hall of Fame
right-handed pitcher with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was one
of the dominant starting pitchers of the 1960s who pitched 6
shouts in a row. He became a radio and television broadcaster
following his playing career.
BASEBALL RECORD SET ON THIS DAY IN 1927
“The Georgia Peach” ,Ty Cobb, set a major league baseball record
by getting his 4,000th career hit. He hit a total 4,191 before he retired
in 1928.
