Christopher Latham Sholes (below), Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soule of Milwaukee, Wisconsin received a patent for a new typewriter, shown above. It was the first commercially successful typewriter, and the design was eventually purchased by Remington and Sons, which later became the Remington Arms Company.
International Business Machines (IBM) is headquartered in Armonk, New York and manufactures and sells computer hardware and software. It also offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services. IBM was founded in 1911 as the Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation thorough the merger of four companies. CTR adopted the name International Business Machines in 1924. Fortune ranked IBM the 18th largest firm in the United States, as well as the 7th most profitable.
The UNIVAC I (UNIVersal Automatic Computer I, seen below) was the first commercial computer produced in the United States. It was delivered to the U.S. Census Bureau on March 31, 1951, and was dedicated on June 14 that same year. .
Les Paul was a guitarist, songwriter and inventor. He was a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar. Paul is credited with many recording techniques such as overdubbing, phasing effects and multi- track recording. His unique playing style set him apart from his many contemporaries and inspired most of today’s guitarists. Les Paul recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950, selling millions of records. Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame.
