FIRST MAGAZINE IN AMERICA ON THIS DAY IN 1741

The American Magazine was the first magazine published in the American colonies, 
edited by John Webbe in Philadelphia. It preceded Benjamin Franklin’s General 
Magazine by three days. The monthly periodical covered the proceedings of 
colonial government, as well as moral, political, and historical topics. It was 
in print for only three months.

George J. Laurer, an engineer at IBM, is considered the inventor of the
U.P.C. or Uniform Product Code in 1973. In June of 1974, the first U.P.C.
scanner was installed at a Marsh’s supermarket in Troy, Ohio. The first
product to have a bar code included was a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit
chewing gum.
