COMMENTATOR BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1906
John Cameron Swayze (April 4, 1906 – August 15, 1995)
Swayze was a popular news commentator and game show panelist during
the 1950s. He first sought work as an actor,but acting roles in Broadway
theater during 1929 became scarce due to the stock market crash.
Swayze returned to the Midwest and began working for the Kansas City
Journal Post as a reporter. He soon graduated to radio in 1940 doing
news updates for the local CBS radio affiliate KMBC. He later moved
to Los Angeles and Hollywood where NBC hired him for its western
news division before moving him to its New York news operation
in 1947.
In 1949 Swayze was chosen to host NBC’s first television newscast,
the fifteen-minute Camel News Caravan where he.read items from
the news wires and periodically interviewed newsmakers.
THE LES PAUL & MARY FORD SHOW
The Les Paul & Mary Ford Show (aka Les Paul & Mary Ford At Home) was widely syndicated during 1954-’55, and was only five minutes (one or two songs) long on
film. It was often used as a brief interlude or fill-in in programming schedules. Since
Les created the entire show himself, including audio and video, he maintained
the original recordings and was in the process of restoring them to up-to-date
quality until his death in 2009.
DINAH SHORE ( FEB. 29, 1916-FEB. 24, 1994)
Dinah Shore was a popular recording artist during the Big Band era of the 1940s
and 1950s. She was the first singer to achieve huge solo success. She achieved
even greater success a decade later, in television, mainly as hostess of a series
of variety programs for Chevrolet. TV Guide magazine ranked her at #16 on their
list of the top fifty television stars of all time.
