MUSICAL FILM PREMIERED IN NEW YORK ON THIS DATE IN 1965

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s musical film The Sound of Music was directed by Robert Wise and starred Julie Andrews (above) and Christopher
Plummer. It won a total of five Academy Awards including Best Picture in 1965
and is one of the most popular musicals ever produced. The cast album was
nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The film ultimately
grossed over $158 million at the U.S. and Canada box office, and displaced
Gone With the Wind as the all-time champion.

BELOVED GOSPEL SINGER IS 102 TODAY!

George Beverly "Bev" Shea is a Grammy-Award-winning bass-baritone gospel music singer and the composer of several hymns.  Shea is considered "the first international singing ‘star’ of the gospel world," as a result of his solos at Billy Graham Crusades
and his exposure on radio, records, and television. According to the Guinness Book
of Records, Shea holds the world record for singing in person to the most people ever,
with an estimated cumulative live audience of 220 million people. Shea has been a 
musical mainstay in Graham’s crusades since 1947.

IT WAS #1 ON THIS DATE IN 1976 AND BARRY DIDN’T WRITE IT!

This Barry Manilow song was written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach
Boys.
It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated 
for Record of the Year in 1977. It became one of Manilow’s signature
songs.
