The popular Christmas carol was composed by Franz
Xaver  Gruber, an Austrian primary school teacher and
church organist. The lyrics were written by Rev. Joseph
Mohr, pictured below.

This poem was published anonymously in the Troy (N.Y.) Sentinel.
The author is believed to be Clement Clark Moore. It has been called
”the best known verses ever written by an American” and is largely
responsible for the conception of Santa Claus. Four hand-written
copies of the poem are known to exist, three are in museums and
the fourth copy was signed by Moore as a gift to a friend. It was
sold by a collector in December of 2006 for $280,000.
