Walter Winchell (April 7, 1897 – February 20, 1972) was a vaudeville
performer at first, and later a newspaper and radio commentator. He
invented the gossip column while at the New York Evening Graphic and
soon became a syndicated columnist at the New York Daily Mirror. He
made his radio debut at WABC in New York in 1930. In 1948 Winchell
had the top rated radio show when he surpassed Fred Allen and Jack
Benny. Later during his career, Walter received $25,000 an episode
to narrate The Untouchables on ABC-TV for five seasons beginning
in 1959.

WEEKLY MAGAZINE DEBUTED ON THIS DATE 1888
Collier’s Weekly was a magazine founded by Irish immigrant, Peter Fenelon
Collier (pictured below) and was published from 1888 to 1957. With the passage
of time, the title was shortened to Collier’s. The periodical featured stories and
news articles, both fact and fiction. In 2010, the Collier’s trademark was purchased
by JTE Multimedia, which plans to resurrect the magazine.
