BOOK ON BABY CARE PUBLISHED ON THIS DAY IN 1946

Dr. Benjamin McLane Spock was an pediatrician who, in 1946 published
his book The Common Sense of Baby and Child Care, which became a
bestseller. By 1998 it had sold more than 50 million copies.The book has
been translated into 39 languages. Dr. Spock later wrote three more
books on parenting.

Jane Marie Lynch is a comedienne, actress and singer. Since 2009,
she has played the role of Sue Sylvester in the Fox musical-comedy
series Glee for which she has won an Emmy Award a well as a Golden
Globe Award. She has also appeared in comedy films such as Best in
Show (2000) and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005).

ACTOR ROBERTS BLOSSOM ~ DEAD AT 87

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) – Character actor Roberts Blossom, who played
the white-bearded neighbor "old man Marley" in the movie "Home Alone," has
died at age 87 in Southern California.

Daughter Deborah Blossom tells the Los Angeles Times that her father died
of natural causes July 8 at a Santa Monica nursing home.

Blossom starred on Broadway, as well as in television and movies. He won
three Obie Awards for his off-Broadway work.

Movie credits include "The Hospital," "Slaughterhouse-Five," "The Great
Gatsby,” "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Escape From Alcatraz,"
"Resurrection" and "Doc Hollywood.”

WOODROW WILSON ‘’WOODY’’ GUTHRIE

Woody Guthrie was a singer-songwriter and folk musician who influenced many 
musicians including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen. His musical 
legacy includes political, traditional and children’s songs. Guthrie’s best-known
song is “This Land is Your Land”. He is the father of musician Arlo Guthrie
(pictured below).

Woody Guthrie wrote this song in 1940 and recorded it in 1944. It was
not published until 1945.

Gerald R. Ford was the 38th President of the United States, serving from
1974 to 1977, and the 40th Vice President serving from 1973 to 1974. His
wife, Betty Ford, died on July 8, 2011. Like her husband, she also died at
age 93. They are the longest lived Presidential couple.
