When Chet Huntley retired from the anchor chair of The Huntley–Brinkley Report
in 1970, the evening news program was renamed NBC Nightly News, and David
Brinkley co-anchored the broadcast with John Chancellor and Frank McGee.The
early years of the Nightly News never matched the popularity the Huntley-Brinkley
Report had enjoyed. The NBC network attempted to launch several news magazine
shows with Brinkley as anchor and none of them succeeded. He soon became
unhappy and left NBC in 1981. He was almost immediately offered a position
at ABC where he anchored the Sunday morning TV news program, Issues
and Answers, later titled “This Week with David Brinkley”.
