SCI-FI SERIES PREMIERED ON THIS DAY IN 1968

Land of the Giants
was an hour-long science fiction television series that ran on ABC 
for two seasons beginning on Sunday September 22, 1968 and ending March 22,  
1970. The show was created and produced by Irwin Allen, nicknamed "The Master  
of Disaster" for his work in the disaster film genre.

CHART ENTRY ON THIS DATE IN 1958

"To Know Him Is To Love Him" by The Teddy Bears entered the Billboard Hot 100 
at #88. Lead singer Annette Kleinbard was backed by Phil Spector on guitar, and
Marshall Leib on bass with a last minute addition of Sandy Nelson on drums.The
recording session reportedly lasted only 20 minutes at a cost of just $75.The song reached #1 in early December and sold over 1.4 million copies. Phil Spector wrote
“To Know Him Is To Love Him”, inspired by words on his father’s tombstone.

September 22, 1964, to January 15, 1968. The show stars Robert Vaughn
and David McCallum portraying secret agents.

FORD’S EIGHT TRACK PLAYER DEBUTED IN 1965

In September 1965, Ford Motor Company introduced factory-installed and
dealer-installed eight-track tape players as an option on three of its 1966
models (Mustang, Thunderbird and Lincoln), and RCA Victor introduced
175 Stereo-8 Cartridges from its RCA Victor & RCA Camden artist’s
catalogs. By the 1967 model year, all of Ford’s vehicles offered this
tape player upgrade option.

EXECUTIVE ORDER ANNOUNCED ON THIS DATE IN 1862

Emancipation_Proclamation 

On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln announced that he would
issue a formal emancipation of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States
of America that did not return to Union control by January 1, 1863. None did
return and the actual order, signed and issued January 1, 1863, took effect
except in locations where the Union had already mostly regained control.Total
abolition of slavery was finalized by the Thirteenth Amendment which took effect
in December 1865.The freedom of 3.1 million of the nation’s 4 million slaves was proclaimed, and immediately 50,000 of them were freed, with nearly all the rest
seeing freedom as Union armies advanced.
