reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it one of the better-
known Sedaka songs alongside "Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen" "Oh

RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1961
BROADWAY HIT OPENED ON THIS DAY IN 1957
After years of development and a change of producers, the original Broadway
production The Music Man opened on Thursday, December 19, 1957 at the
Majestic Theater in New York City. It won five Tony Awards, including Best
Musical, and also won the New York Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical. The
show remained at the Majestic for almost three years before transferring to
The Broadway Theater to complete its 1,375-performance run. The production
starred Robert Preston who went on to reprise his role in the 1962 screen
adaptation.
CHRISTMAS SPECIAL DEBUTED 45 YEARS AGO
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a 26-minute animated short based on the
children’s book by Dr. Seuss. It was originally aired on CBS television on Sunday, December 18, 1966 and was aired annually during the Christmas season until 1987 when it was acquired by TBS. It is one of a few Christmas specials from the 1960s
that is still being shown regularly on TV. Boris Karloff, in one of his final roles,
narrates the film and also provides the speaking voice of The Grinch.
RETURN OF APOLLO 17 ON THIS DAY IN 1972
The Apollo 17 command module, with astronauts Eugene A.Cernan, Ronald E. Evans
and Harrison H. Schmitt aboard,reentered Earth’s atmosphere and splashed down
safely in the Pacific Ocean at 2:25 PM, 4 miles from the recovery ship, USS
Ticonderoga and about 350 nautical miles southeast of the Samoan Islands,
thus concluding the final lunar landing mission in the Apollo program.

CLASSIC FILM RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1961
Judgment at Nuremberg is a 1961 drama based on the Holocaust and the Post-
World War ll Nuremberg Military Tribunal in 1947 of certain judges who served
during the Nazi regime in Germany. The movie won the Academy Award for Best
Actor (Maximilian Schell) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from
Another Medium, and was nominated for eleven Academy Awards. Many of the
big name actors who appeared in the film did so for a fraction of their usual
salaries because they believed in the social importance of the project.
