Los Angeles (AP)- The Academy Award statuette that Orson Welles won for
the original screenplay of “Citizen Kane” was recently auctioned for more than
$861,000 in Los Angeles. The 1942 Oscar was thought to be lost for decades. It surfaced in 1994 when cinematographer Gary Graver tried to sell it. The sale
was stopped by Beatrice Welles, Orson’s youngest daughter and sole heir.
The auction house declined to release the highest bidder’s name. Welles, who
wrote the screenplay for "Citizen Kane" with Herman Mankiewicz, also directed
and starred in the film, considered by most critics to be one of the best of all
time.
The movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a 1954 adventure film starring Kirk
Douglas and James Mason. It was the first science fiction film produced by Walt
Disney Productions, as well as the only science-fiction produced by Walt Disney
himself. It was also the first feature length Disney film to be distributed by Buena
Vista Distribution. It is the best-known adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. The
film won two Academy Awards and was nominated for one more.
