James "Jimmy" Dorsey (February 29, 1904 – June 12, 1957)
Jimmy Dorsey was a prominent Jazz musician, composer, and big
band leader. He is the older brother of band leader Tommy Dorsey.
“So Rare” was recorded November 11, 1956 and released in January of 1957. It went
to the #2 Billboard position and remained on the charts for 26 weeks. It became the
highest charting song by a big band during the first decade of the rock and roll era.
(A note from this blogger: This was the very first record I purchased with part of my
weekly allowance at age 14.)
