President Roosevelt counting dimes with Basil O’Conner, organizer of the
March Of Dimes campaign.
The nonprofit organization March of Dimes Foundation was founded by then-
President Franklin D. Roosevelt to help combat polio. Roosevelt was himself
diagnosed with polio in 1921, and it left him unable to move his legs.
In 1956-57 Elvis Presley helped promote polio vaccinations for the
March of Dimes. He was photographed (above) with the poster girl
of the organization, Joanne Wilson. Elvis also had his polio shot.
