CONSTRUCTION BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1927
The George Washington Bridge is a double-decked suspension bridge spanning the
Hudson River, connecting the Washington Heights neighborhood in the borough of
Manhattan in New York City to Fort Lee, Bergen County, New Jersey.
Groundbreaking for the Bridge was on October 21, 1927. Construction soon began
with an estimated cost of $75,000,000. It was dedicated on October 24, 1931, and
opened to traffic the following day.The bridge was the world’s longest suspension
bridge at the time. It was initially named the “Hudson River Bridge”.

"Jailhouse Rock" was released on September 24, 1957, to coincide
with the release of Presley’s motion picture, Jailhouse Rock. The
song is #67 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of
All Time. It was also named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
