On September 28, 1789, George Washington, in his first term as U.S. President, was
presented with a resolution by the First Federal Bicameral Congress asking that he
recommend to the nation a day of thanksgiving.  A few days later, Washington issued
a proclamation making Thursday, Nov. 26, 1789 as a “Day of Publick Thanksgiving,”
which was the first time Thanksgiving was celebrated under the Constitution.
