FILM RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1942
The animated film “Bambi” was produced by Walt Disney, the fifth in the
Disney Animated Classics series. It was released by RKO Radio Pictures
and opened initially at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, NY.
COMIC STRIP LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1934
The comic strip Li’l Abner featured a fictional clan of hillbillies in the mountain
village of Dogpatch,Kentucky. Written and drawn by Al Capp (1909–1979), the
strip ran for 43 years, from August 13, 1934 through November 13, 1977. It was distributed by United Feature Syndicate.
ACTING LEGEND IS DEAD AT 89
Lauren Bacall (Betty Joan Perske) (September 16, 1924 – August 12, 2014)
The actress, who rose to fame in the 1940s opposite her husband Humphrey
Bogart, reportedly suffered a stroke in New York City.
COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE LAUNCHED

The balloon satellite Echo One was launched by NASA from Cape Canaveral, FL.
on August 12, 1960. The project was the first passive communications satellite experiment. It functioned as a reflector, not a transceiver, so that after it was
placed in a low Earth orbit, a signal would be sent to it, reflected or bounced
off its surface, and then returned to Earth.
