BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1917
John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (October 21, 1917 – January 6, 1993)
Considered one of the greatest jazz trumpeters in history, many call Dizzy
Gillespie the Ambassador of Jazz. His first professional gig was in 1935 with
the Frank Fairfax Orchestra, followed by stints with the orchestras of Edgar
Hayes, Teddy Hill, and Cab Calloway,

Carrie Frances Fisher is 58 today
Carrie Fisher appeared in Las Vegas shows with her mother, Debbie
Reynolds, when she was twelve. She also wrote the bestselling novel,
Postcards from the Edge.
SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1957
The Twentieth Century was a half-hour documentary series televised
by CBS. The premiere episode aired on Sunday October 20, 1957
and ran until 1966. It was hosted and narrated by Walter Cronkite. It
covered historical events and consisted of newsreel footage along
with interviews. The sponsor of the show was Prudential Insurance
Company of America.
BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1882
Bela Lugosi (Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó)
(20 October 1882 – 16 August 1956)
The Hungarian actor is best remembered for portraying
Count Dracula in the original 1931 film and for his roles in
various other horror films. Lugosi dropped out of school
when he was twelve years old, and began appearing in
Shakespeare plays.
