GUITAR MAKER BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1909

Clarence Leonidas "Leo" Fender (August 10, 1909 – March 21, 1991)

Fender was creator of the famous Fender brand of guitars. He also founded the 
Music Man and G&L Musical Instruments companies. During his early years he 
made money repairing radios as a teenager in California. In 2009, Leo Fender 
was awarded a Technical Grammy Award for contributions of outstanding
technical significance to the recording field. He never learned to play the
instruments which he made a career of building.

SERIES DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1975

The vocal group The Manhattan Transfer performed songs and took
part in comedy skits as the stars of their own hour-long variety show,
which ran for four weeks in the summer of 1975 on CBS-TV. Reggae
legend Bob Marley made his first American TV appearance on the
series. The show was filmed at CBS Studio in Hollywood, CA on
June 21, 1975, and was recorded live in front of a studio audience.

FRANK GIFFORD HAS DIED AT 84

Francis Newton "Frank" Gifford (August 16, 1930 – August 9, 2015)

(AP) – Frank Gifford, a Hall of Fame football player for the New York Giants
and a legendary broadcaster, died Sunday morning at his Connecticut home
of natural causes. He was just seven days shy of his 85th birthday.

Gifford is survived, among others, by his wife, television personality Kathy
Lee Gifford.

Samuel Pack "Sam" Elliott was born in Sacramento, California.

Elliott moved from California to Oregon with his family when he was a
teenager. He graduated from David Douglas High School in Portland 
and attended Clark College in Vancouver, Washington.

Sam Elliott was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Acting
Ensemble for his small role as the Chief Pilot of American Airlines in
Up in the Air. He has performed voice-over narration for various
commercials.
