A FORMER TV STAPLE ON THIS DAY

ldt

For TV viewers old enough to remember watching the Jerry Lewis MDA
Labor Day Telethon, it was a one-of-a-kind experience. The show was
founded and hosted by actor and comedian Jerry Lewis, who hosted
the broadcast from its 1966 inception until 2010. A telethon would
broadcast for up to 21½ hours, starting on the Sunday evening
preceding Labor Day and continuing until late Monday afternoon on
the holiday itself. MDA called its network of participating stations the
"Love Network". The show originated from Las Vegas for 28 of the
years it was broadcast.

Labor Day 1911 in Medford, Oregon

While most sources, even the Department of Labor, credit Peter McGuire with
the origination of Labor Day (1882), recent evidence suggests that the true
father of Labor Day may in fact be another famous union leader of the 19th
Century, Matthew Maguire.

Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887. By the
time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated
Labor Day.

FIRST PRODUCTION ON THIS DAY IN 1899

cmpc

In 1898, the Washington Condensed Milk Company established a condensing
plant in Kent, Washington. Within one and one-half years the company went
bankrupt. The Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Company, established by Elbridge
Amos Stuart (below), acquired the plant and in 1899, produced the first cases
of evaporated milk, called Carnation Sterilized Cream. The company would later
change its name and become the world famous Carnation Milk Company.
