WOMEN GRANTED THE RIGHT TO VOTE
Congress passed the 19th Amendment, granting the right
to vote to women, on this day in history, June 4, 1919 —
sending the text of the amendment to the states for it’s
ratification.
The amendment read, "The right of citizens of the United
States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the
United States or by any State on account of sex."
The U.S. Senate’s webpage for the centennial of women’s
suffrage said the Senate voted 56-25 in favor of the
amendment.
BATTLE OF MIDWAY BEGAN ON THIS DAY
On June 4, 1942, the Battle of Midway—one of the most decisive
U.S. victories against Japan during World War II—began.
During the four-day sea-and-air battle, the outnumbered U.S.
Pacific Fleet succeeded in destroying four Japanese aircraft
carriers while losing only one of its own, the Yorktown, to the
previously invincible Japanese navy.
NORTHWEST ACTRESS HAS PASSED AT 101
NEW YORK (AP) — Janis Paige, a popular actress in Hollywood
and in Broadway musicals and comedies who danced with Fred
Astaire, toured with Bob Hope and continued to perform well into
her 80s, has died. She was one of the last surviving stars from
the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Paige , born in Tacoma, Washington, died Sunday of natural
causes at her Los Angeles home.
