On Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor on this day in 1884, the cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty was laid.

On this day in 1957, American Bandstand made its network debut
on ABC-TV. The show was hosted by Dick Clark. Until this day the
show had been a local show in Philadelphia since 1952.

Ginger Rogers (Virginia Katherine McMath) Independence, MO. 
(July 16, 1911 – April 25, 1995)

Ginger Rogers appeared as the dance partner of Fred Astaire in a number
of classic movie musicals, such as Top Hat, Swing Time, and The Gay
Divorce. Her classic line, "Cigarette me, big boy," in the 1930 film Young
Man of Manhattan became a much-quoted catchphrase during the 1930s.

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire danced together in 10 movies.

Dame Olivia Mary de Havilland

Retired actress Olivia de Havilland portrayed Melanie Hamilton in Gone with the
Wind. Her performance in the 1946 film To Each His Own earned her an Academy
Award for Best Actress. Her acting career began when she participated in school
drama club.

She is of British heritage but was born in Japan. Her first stage production was at
the Hollywood Bowl, playing Hermia in A Midsummer’s night Dream.

CAMILLE BOHANNON

On this day in 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty
could constitute "cruel and unusual punishment." The ruling prompted
states to revise their capital punishment laws.

Israel removed barricades, re-unifying Jerusalem on this day in
1967.

The shuttle Atlantis (bottom) and the Russian space station Mir docked,
forming the largest man-made satellite ever to orbit the Earth on this
day in 1995.

Rosemary Clooney (May 23, 1928 – June 29, 2002)

Singer Rosemary Clooney came to prominence in the
early 1950s with the song "Come On-a My House". She
received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in
2002.

Katharine Houghton Hepburn (May 12, 1907 – June 29, 2003)

Actress Katharine Hepburn was a leading lady in Hollywood for
more than 60 years. She received four Academy Awards for Best
Actress—a record for any performer. In 1999, Hepburn was named
by the American Film Institute as the greatest female star of Classic
Hollywood Cinema.

Actress June Lockhart played a motherly figure on the CBS television
series Lassie from 1954 to 1973 and Lost in Space on CBS from 1965 to
1968. She is a two-time Emmy Award nominee and a Tony Award winner.

She made her film debut in A Christmas Carol (1938) opposite of her
