PAST EVENTS THAT BECAME HISTORY
THE ‘’KING OF ROCK’’ GOT HIS FIRST GUITAR
Elvis Presley got his first guitar on his 11th birthday, January
8, 1946, from the Tupelo Hardware Store in Mississippi.
His mother, Gladys, bought him the inexpensive acoustic guitar
for around $7.75 after he initially wanted a rifle or bicycle.

TEAM PLAYED FIRST GAME ON THIS DAY
On January 7, 1927, the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team
traveled 48 miles west from Chicago to play their first game
in Hinckley, Illinois.
The Globetrotters were the creation of Abe Saperstein of
Chicago, who took over coaching duties for a team of
African American players originally known as the Savoy
Big Five (after the famous Chicago ballroom where they
played their early games).
At a time when only whites were allowed to play on
professional basketball teams, Saperstein decided to
promote his new team’s racial makeup by naming them
after Harlem, the famous African American neighborhood
of New York City.

IMPEACHMENT TRIAL BEGAN ON THIS DAY
On January 7, 1999, the impeachment trial of President
Bill Clinton, formally charged with lying under oath and
obstructing justice, began in the Senate.
As instructed in Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution,
Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist was
sworn in to preside, and the senators were sworn in
as jurors.
Congress had only attempted to remove a president on
one other occasion: the 1868 impeachment trial of
President Andrew Johnson, who incurred the Republican
Party’s wrath after he had proposed a conservative
Reconstruction plan.

SKATER ATTACKED ON THIS DAY IN 1994
Olympic hopeful Nancy Kerrigan was attacked at a Detroit ice
rink following a practice session two days before the Olympic
trials. A man hit Kerrigan with a club on the back of her knee,
causing the figure skater to cry out in pain and bewilderment.
When the full story emerged a week later, the nation became
caught up in a real-life soap opera.
One of Kerrigan’s chief rivals for a place on the U.S. Figure
Skating Team was Tonya Harding. In mid-December 1993,
Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, approached Shawn
Eckardt about somehow eliminating Kerrigan from the
competition.
Eckardt set up a meeting with Derrick Smith and Shane
Stant, who agreed to injure Kerrigan for a fee.
Tonya Harding pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder the
prosecution of Kerrigan’s attackers. She was fined $100,000
and sentenced to probation and 500 hours of community
service.
Other than Gillooly’s testimony, there was never any further
evidence of Harding’s knowledge of the plans before the
attack.

Tanya Harding turned 55 on November 12th. She
was born in Portland, Oregon.
Nancy Kerrigan became 56 October 13th.
