Alton Glen "Glenn" Miller
(March 1, 1904 – December 15, 1944)

After departing from an airfield outside London on December
15, 1944, a single-engine aircraft carrying trombonist and
bandleader
Glenn Miller went missing
over the English
Channel.

Miller was traveling to France for a congratulatory performance
for American troops that had recently helped to liberate Paris.

The wreckage of Miller’s plane was never found. His official
military status remains Missing in Action.

Schindler’s List, starring Liam Neeson in the true story of a
German businessman who saves the lives of more than a
thousand Polish Jews during the
Holocaust, opens in
theaters.

The film was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and took
home seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best
Director.

It was the first Best Director win for Spielberg, who had been
nominated in the category for three of his earlier films: 1977’s
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 1981’s Raiders of the
Lost Ark
and 1982’s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

Adolf Eichmann

Adolf Eichmann's son lives near where Mossad captured Nazi mastermind - report | The Times of Israel

In Tel Aviv, Israel, Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi SS officer who
organized
Adolf Hitler’s “final solution of the Jewish question,
” is
condemned to death by an Israeli war crimes tribunal.

He claimed he was just following orders, but the judges
disagreed, finding him guilty on all counts on December
15 and sentencing him to die.

On May 31, 1962, he was hanged near Tel Aviv. His body
was cremated and his ashes thrown into the sea.

Bloodletting, blisters and the mystery of Washington's death

George Washington, the American revolutionary leader and
first president of the United States,
died at his estate in
Mount Vernon, Virginia. He was 67 years old.

Modern medical authors largely have concluded that the
former president likely died from extensive bloodletting
which may have caused
hypovolemic shock
.

CANCER TOOK THE LIFE OF ROGER MARIS

Roger Eugene Maris was a professional baseball right fielder
who played 12 seasons in
Major League Baseball. He is best
known for setting a new
MLB single-season home run record
with 61
home runs in 1961.

Maris was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1983. In
response, Maris organized the annual Roger Maris Celebrity
Golf Tournament to raise money for cancer research and
treatment.

He died of the disease at age 51 on December 14, 1985, at M.D.
Anderson Hospital
in Houston, Texas and was buried at Holy
Cross Cemetery in Fargo, North Dakota.
