On this day in 1968, three Apollo 8 astronauts, James A. Lovell,
William Anders and Frank Borman, reached the moon. They
orbited the moon 10 times before coming back to Earth. Seven
months later man first landed on the moon.

Eugene Andrew "Gene" Cernan (March 14, 1934 – January 16, 2017)

(FoxNews) – Gene Cernan, an early NASA astronaut who was the last man to
set foot on the moon, died Monday, according to a NASA announced in a
tweet.

Cernan was the commander of Apollo 17 in December 1972 – the last lunar
mission and one of the final Apollo flights.

Apollo 12 was the sixth manned flight in the U.S. Apollo program and the
second to land on the Moon. It was launched from the Kennedy Space
Center
, Florida, four months after Apollo 11. Mission commander Charles
"Pete" Conrad
and Lunar Module Pilot Alan L. Bean performed just over
one day and seven hours of lunar surface activity while Command Module
Pilot Richard F. Gordon remained in lunar orbit. The landing site for the
mission was located in the southeastern portion of the Ocean of Storms.
