African-American poet and author Maya Angelou is known for her 1969 autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, as well as for her poem
"On the Pulse of Morning." She was mute for five years as the result of
trauma and, during this period, developed her lifelong love of literature.

On this day in 1969, James Earl Ray pled guilty in Memphis, TN, to
the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Ray later repudiated the
guilty plea and maintained his innocence until his death in April of
1998.

On this day in 1993, U.S. Federal agents raided the compound of an armed religious cult in Waco, TX. The ATF had planned to arrest
the leader of the Branch Davidians, David Koresh, on federal
firearms charges. Four agents and six Davidians were killed and
a 51-day standoff followed.

on this day in 1986. He was 59.
