The first commercial around-the-world airline flight took place on
this day in 1942. Pan American Airlines was the company that
made history with the feat.

On this day in 1994, figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was clubbed on 
the right leg by an assailant at Cobo Arena in Detroit, MI. Four
men were later sentenced to prison for the attack, including
Tonya Harding’s ex-husband.

war leaders were executed in Tokyo on this day in 1948. They
had been found guilty of crimes against humanity.

The crew of the U.S. Navy ship, Pueblo, was released by North Korea
on this day in 1968. The Captain of the Pueblo, Commander Lloyd M. Bucher, and 82 of his crew were held for 11 months after the ship
was seized by North Korea because of suspected spying by the U.S.

On this day in 1986, the experimental airplane Voyager, piloted by
Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, completed the first non-stop, around-
the-world flight without refueling as it landed safely at Edwards Air
Force Base in California.

craft while his brother Wilbur ran alongside.

The United States successfully test-fired the Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time on this day in 1957.

South American patriot Simon Bolivar died in Colombia on this day
in 1830. Cause of death was listed as Tuberculosis. He was 47.

Television history was made on this day in 1969 when singer Tiny
Tim and Miss Vicki Budinger were married on "The Tonight Show"
with Johnny Carson.

JOHN BELMONT

In Oslo, Norway on this day in 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
received the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the youngest person
to receive the award.

Women were granted the right to vote in the Wyoming Territory
on this day in 1869.

The first domestic passenger jet flight took place in the U.S. on this
day in 1958 when 111 passengers flew from New York to Miami on
a National Airlines Boeing 707.

Soul singer Otis Redding, at age 26, was killed on this day in 1967 
when his tour plane crashed into a Wisconsin lake. The members
of Redding’s tour band, the "Bar-Kays," were also killed.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte died on this day in 2006.

Pinochet was a Chilean general, politician and the dictator of Chile
between 1973 and 1990; he remained the Commander-in-Chief of the 
Chilean Army until 1998. He was also president of the Government
Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981. He died of congestive heart
failure and pulmonary edema.
