‘’CLYDE THE GLIDE’’ IS 53 YEARS OLD TODAY


Clyde Austin Drexler was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Hall of Fame guard/forward Clyde Drexler won an Olympic gold medal with the
legendary Dream Team in 1992. He was selected to 10 NBA All-Star games as
a member of the Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets and won an NBA
Championship with the Rockets in 1995.

MOVIE PREMIERED ON THIS DAY IN 1963

 

The epic historical drama film “Cleopatra” premiered at the Rivoli Theatre in
New York City. It was the most expensive film ever made up to that point and
almost bankrupted 20th Century-Fox. It later won four Academy Awards, and
was nominated for five more, including Best Picture
(which it lost to Tom Jones).

PETER YARROW IS 77 TODAY

Singer Peter Yarrow found fame with the 1960s folk music trio Peter,
Paul and Mary
who sang "Puff, the Magic Dragon." In 1982, Yarrow
was the recipient of the Allard K. Lowenstein Award. He established
the anti-bullying group Operation Respect.

SPORTS GREAT BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1887

 
James Francis "Jim" Thorpe (May 28, 1887 – March 28, 1953)

Thorpe was a Native American star of football, baseball, and the Olympics in the
1910’s and 1920’s. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963
and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.

In a poll of sports fans conducted by ABC Sports, Thorpe was voted the Greatest
Athlete of the Twentieth Century out of 15 other athletes including Muhammad Ali,
Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens, Wayne Gretzky, Jack Nicklaus, and Michael Jordan.
