HERB ALPERT IS 79 TODAY
Alpert, along with his group The Tijuana Brass (or TJB) recorded five
number-one albums among a total of 28 on the Billboard Album chart
and received eight Grammy Awards, sold 14 platinum albums and
14 gold. He also co-founded A&M Records with partner Jerry Moss.
Alpert is the only recording artist to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot
100 pop chart as both a vocalist ("This Guy’s in Love with You", 1968)
and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979).

Samuel Moore "Sam" Walton (March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992)
Oklahoma-born Sam Walton is the founder of Walmart retail chain and
Sam’s Club. He worked at J.C. Penny in Des Moines, Iowa, training in
management. He managed his first variety store, which was part of
the Butler Brothers chain, in 1945 when he was only 26.

FAST FOOD FOUNDER BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1917
Carl Karcher’s fast food career started with a hot dog cart in Los
Angeles that took in $14.75 on July 17, 1941, his first day in the
business. He had been a delivery boy for a bakery based in
Anaheim. Carl and his wife Margaret had 12 children.
Carl’s Jr. hamburger chain is now owned by parent company
CKE Restaurants, Inc. It is in the top ten fast-food chains in the
United States.
