A chief petty officer is a senior non-commissioned officer and the
seventh enlisted rank in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. The
grade was established on April 1, 1893 for the Navy. The United
States Congress first authorized the Coast Guard to use the
promotion to Chief Petty Officer on 18 May 1920.

GABE KAPLAN TURNED 68 TODAY
Gabriel W. "Gabe" Kaplan is a comedian, actor, poker commentator,
and professional poker player. He is best remembered starring in the
ABC-TV sitcom “Welcome Back Kotter” (1975 to 1979.
Although he originally wanted to become a baseball star, he eventually
began working as a bellman and stand-up comedian.
THE FINAL SHOW ON THIS DAY IN 1962

Jack Paar drew millions of viewers every week night while he was host
of the Tonight show (1957-1962. The late night talk show was later
renamed “The Jack Paar Show”. His original announcer was actor
Franklin Pangborn, but he was let go within weeks for not showing
enough enthusiasm. He was replaced by Hugh Downs who stayed
with the show to the final airing on March 30, 1962.
Paar left the show, citing he could no longer handle the strenuous
load of putting on a 105 minute show, five nights a week. A new
host was chosen to replace him, his name was Johnny Carson.

Samuel Moore "Sam" Walton (March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992)
Walton is the founder of Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart Stores. He got the idea
for a wholesale supermarket as a youth during the Great Depression.
Sam Walton open his first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas in
1962.
FIRST AUTOMOBILE SOLD ON THIS DAY IN 1898
From Scientific American Magazine, 1898
The Winton Motor Carriage Company was one of the first American companies to
sell a motor car. On March 24, 1898, 70 year old Robert Allison of Port Carbon, Pennsylvania became the first person to buy a Winton after seeing the first ad for
a automobile in Scientific American magazine. The company later bought the car
back and donated it to the Smithsonian Museum in 1929.
