FAD WAS PATENTED ON THIS DAY IN 1963

Hula Hoop Exercises To Shrink Belly Fat ...

March 5, 1963: the Hula Hoop, a hip-swiveling toy that
became a huge fad across America when it was first
marketed by Wham-O in 1958,
was patented by the
company’s co-founder, Arthur “Spud” Melin.

An estimated 25 million Hula Hoops were sold in its
first four months of production alone.

Following the Hula Hoop, Wham-O continued to produce
a steady stream of wacky and beloved novelty items,
including the Superball, Water Wiggle, Silly String, Slip
‘n’ Slide and the Hacky Sack.

POPULAR MAGAZINE FIRST PUBLISHED

December 17 1892 | Vogue

On December 17, 1892, Arthur Baldwin Turnure first published
a
new magazine, dedicated to “the ceremonial side of life”
and targeted at “the sage as well as the debutante, men of
affairs as well as the belle.”

As a product of the Gilded Age, Vogue has chronicled and
influenced high society, fashion and culture ever since.

Publisher Condé Nast purchased Vogue in 1905, changing it
to focus almost entirely on women and fashion and creating
the first of its international editions (there are now over 20).

The magazine has remained popular and relevant ever since,
regularly featuring the work of world-famous models, writers
and photographers.
