CROSSWORD PUZZLE PUBLISHED ON THIS DAY IN 1913

Arthur-Wynne

Arthur Wynne (above), a journalist from Liverpool, England, published what he
called a “word-cross” puzzle in the “Fun” supplement of the Sunday edition of the
New York World
. It was the first crossword puzzle to be published. The name was
later changed to “crossword” and became a regular weekly feature in the World
and spread to other newspapers.

IMAGINARY BATTLES BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1965

The Peanuts comic strip character Snoopy is famous for his alter-egos, one of which 
is the imaginary battles with World War l Flying Ace “The Red Baron”. The fantasy’s
first appeared in the strip on Sunday October 10, 1965 (above).

QUIZ SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1950

The quiz show You Bet Your Life made the transition from radio, where
it began October 1947, to NBC television on Thursday October 5, 1950
and ran till September 21, 1961. The show’s original host was comedian
Groucho Marx (of the Marx Brothers), with his announcer and assistant
George Fenneman.

MATCH OF THE CENTURY ON THIS DAY IN 1972

The World Chess Championship of 1972 was a match between challenger Bobby
(above) of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky (below) of the
Soviet Union for the World Chess Championship.The first game of the match began
on July 11, 1972 and took place  in Reykjavik, Iceland. Fischer won the match 12 1/2
to 8 1/2. He became the eleventh official World Champion.

RECORDED ON THIS DATE IN 1940

The Ink Spots

The Ink Spots helped define the musical genre that led to rhythm and blues,
rock and roll, and doo-wop. The groups release of  “Maybe” by Decca records
reached #2 on the chart that year. The Ink Spots version of the song was also
used as the ending theme for the first game of the Fallout franchise.
