SENATOR BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1908
In 1942 McCarthy enlisted as a lieutenant in the United
States Marine Corps, serving as an intelligence officer
for a bomber squadron. He left the marines with the
rank of Captain.
Joseph Raymond "Joe" McCarthy (November 14, 1908 – May 2, 1957)
Joseph McCarthy was a Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin
from 1947 until his death in 1957. He was noted for making claims that there
were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside
the United States federal government and elsewhere. His claims of widespread
Communist subversion, termed McCarthyism, ultimately led him to be censured
by the U.S. Senate.
