Jamestown was a settlement in the Colony of Virginia that was established by the
Virginia Company of London as "James Fort", named for King James I of England. It
was the first permanent
English settlement in what is now the United States, following several earlier failed attempts, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke. It would serve
as capital of the colony for 83 years (from 1616 until 1699).

Victory in Europe Day, also known as VE Day, commemorates the date when the
World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed
forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. The formal
surrender of the occupying German forces in the Channel Islands was not until
9 May 1945. Celebrations erupted throughout the western world, from Moscow
to New York upon hearing of the surrender.
