On the Sunday (Nov. 24th) after the assassination, President Kennedy’s coffin
was carried on a horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state. During
the day and night, hundreds of thousands lined up to view the guarded casket.

Following the assassination of President Kennedy, his body was brought back to Washington, D.C. and placed in the East Room of the White House (above) for
24 hours. On the following Sunday, November 24th, his coffin was carried on a
horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol rotunda to lie in state.
