James Knox Polk (November 2, 1795 – June 15, 1849) was the 11th President of the United States, in office from 1845 to 1849. When he took office, Polk, at 49, became
the youngest man at the time to assume the presidency.

SHE WAS THE FIRST FEMALE AMBASSADOR
When President Truman appointed Iowa born Eugenie Moore Anderson
U.S. Ambassador to Denmark on October 28, 1949; she had the distinction
of becoming the first American woman so serve in the position. Later in 1962,
as minister to Bulgaria, she became the first woman to represent the United
States in a country allied with the Soviet Union.
U.S. PRESIDENT BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1858
Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919)
Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States, in office from 1901 to
1909. He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the short-lived
Progressive, “Bull Moose”, Party of 1912. Before becoming President, he held
various levels of city, state, and federal offices. He was a naturalist, explorer,
hunter and a soldier.
U.N. CORNERSTONE LAID ON THIS DAY IN 1949
U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie and Wallace K. Harrison, Chief Architect are
shown sealing the cornerstone with mortar.
The cornerstone of the permanent headquarters of the United Nations in New York City
was laid on October 24, 1949 during a special open-air General Assembly meeting.The ceremony, marking the fourth anniversary of the United Nations and was attended by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, who was the principal speaker. Copies of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were deposited in the cornerstone by Secretary-General Trygve Lie (shown above).
APOLLO SPLASH DOWN ON THIS DAY IN 1968
October 22, 1968, Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission splashed down during
a rainstorm in the Atlantic 200 nautical miles SSW of Bermuda, close to the planned
impact point and 8 miles north of the recovery ship.The tired, but happy crew was
picked up by helicopter and taken to the U.S.S. Essex. The Apollo 7 Capsule is
currently on display at the Frontiers of Flight Museum located next to Love
Field in Dallas Texas.
