LAND-SPEED RECORD SET ON THIS DAY IN 1904

On January 12, 1904, Henry Ford set a land-speed record of 91.37
mph on the frozen surface of Michigan’s Lake St. Clair. He was
driving a four-wheel vehicle, dubbed the “999,” with a wooden
chassis but no body or hood. Ford’s record was broken within
a month at Ormond Beach, Florida, by a driver named William K. Vanderbilt; even so, the publicity surrounding Ford’s achievement
was valuable to the auto pioneer, who in June of the previous year
had incorporated the Ford Motor Company, which would eventually
go on to become one of America’s Big Three automakers.

BEFORE CDs … IT WAS THE FLOPPY DISKS

Floppy Disks @the_telegraph/Pinterest

While Gen Zers might not be aware of what floppy disks are,
millennials and older generations definitely remember them.

Floppy disks were invented and made by IBM, and before CDs
became a thing they were widely used.

The first floppy disks were made in the late 1960s and they were
8 inches in diameter.

The industry has evolved a lot and today nobody uses them
anymore as USB flash drives, memory cards, and cloud storage
are easily available.

Freeman Gosden (‘Amos’) and Charles Correll (‘Andy’)

On January 12, 1926, the two-man comedy series “Sam ‘n’ Henry”
debuts on Chicago’s WGN radio station. Two years later, after
changing its name to “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” the show becomes one
of the most popular radio programs in American history.

Gosden and Carrell, both vaudeville performers, were doing a
Chicago comedy act in blackface when an employee at the
Chicago Tribune suggested they create a radio show.

AMELIA EARHART SOLO FLIGHT TO HAWAII

On This Day, January 11th
Amelia Earhart is shown on Jan. 12, 1935, after the first
Hawaii-to-California flight. She was the first pilot to
succeed at flying the route.

(FOX NEWS) – Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart departed on a
journey to become the first pilot to successfully fly solo
from
Hawaii
to mainland United States on this day in history, Jan.
11, 1935.

The daring flight across a vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean
had claimed the lives of 10 previous aviators. She earned
$10,000 from promoters in Hawaii for her death-defying
achievement.

Earhart also hoped to promote a future in which commercial
air travel closed the distances around the world.
