THE NEWS THAT MADE HISTORY
‘’NOT MEANT FOR CHILDREN!’’
(FOX News) – The popular popcorn snack Cracker Jacks is getting a new
ingredient – and it’s not something you would expect.
The nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) reported
that Frito-Lay, the manufacturer of Cracker Jacks, will soon introduce a
new version of its snack called Cracker Jack’d – which will have added
caffeine.
Frito-Lay told the Boston Globe the new Cracker Jack’d line is not meant
for children and is specifically developed for adult consumers and will
not be marketed to children.
Chris Kuechenmeister, a Frito-Lay spokesperson, wrote in a statement
to the Boston Globe, “The package design and appearance are wholly
different from Cracker Jack to ensure there is no confusion among consumers.”
A little Cracker Jack history:

Frederick William Rueckheim and his brother Louis mass-produced an
early version of Cracker Jack and sold it at the first Chicago World’s
Fair in 1893. The mixture of popcorn, molasses, and peanuts was then
called "Candied Popcorn and Peanuts". The first lot of the confection
was produced in 1896 and received it’s new name when an enthusiastic
sampler remarked, “That’s crackerjack”, another word for “excellent”.

NO MORE TWINKIES?
The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Hostess Brands, makers of Twinkies
and other snack foods, is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this
week and is talking permanent closure. Hostess, who also makes Wonder Bread, has declined further comment on the matter. The company is headquartered in Irving, TX.
Twinkies were invented in Schiller Park, Illinois in 1930 by James Alexander Dewar, a
baker for the Continental Baking Company.

MADE IN CHOCOLATE TOWN!
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup was created in 1928 by H. B. Reese (below), a former
dairy farmer and shipping foreman for Milton S. Hershey. Reese, was inspired by
Hershey, and left the dairy farm to start his own candy business. The H.B. Reese
Candy Co. was established in the basement of Reese’s home in Hershey, PA. and
used Hershey chocolate in his confections. In 1963, several years after his death,
Reese’s company was sold to Hershey Foods Corporation.
‘’JUST DIP AND SIP’’
It was a drinking straw that turned plain milk into chocolate milk and was put
on the market in Los Angeles by Frontier Foods Corp. in the 1950s. The straw
contained a strip of sugarless chocolate that would dissolve in milk when it
passed through. Strawberry and root-beer flavors were soon added later at
a price of 23 cents a dozen.
