LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1965

Gemini 7 was a manned spaceflight in NASA‘s Gemini program. It was the
fourth manned Gemini flight, the twelfth manned American flight and the
twentieth manned spaceflight including Soviet flights and X-15 flights above
the Kármán line. The crew of Frank F. Borman, II and James A. Lovell, Jr
spent nearly 14 days in space, making a total of 206 orbits. Their spacecraft
was the passive target for the first manned space rendezvous performed by
the crew of Gemini 6A.

LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1961

The lift-off of Mercury-Atlas 5 carrying space chimp "Enos" from
Kennedy Space Center.

The NASA Public Affairs Office issued a press release stating "The men in
charge of Project Mercury have insisted on orbiting the chimpanzee as a
necessary preliminary checkout of the entire Mercury program before risking
a human astronaut." prior to the flight.

The craft orbited the Earth twice and splashed down about 200 miles south of
Bermuda.

The Mariner 4 spacecraft.

Mariner 4 (together with Mariner 3 known as Mariner–Mars 1964) was the fourth
in a
series of spacecraft
intended for planetary exploration in a flyby mode. It was designed to conduct close up scientific observations of Mars and to transmit these observations to Earth. Mariner 4 performed the first successful flyby of the planet
Mars, returning the first pictures of the Martian surface. On December 21, 1967 communications with Mariner 4 were terminated.
